Former Ont. Education Minister Facing Gun Charges

A former Ontario Conservative cabinet minister is facing gun charges.

John Snobelen, who served as education minister in Mike Harris’ government, was charged Friday after police searched his Milton home and allegedly found a Colt. 22-calibre semi-automatic pistol and ammunition.

He turned himself in to Halton Regional Police and was later released.

“I have not yet hired a defence attorney,” he said. “I will do so and I will fight the charges vigorously.”

The 52-year-old high school dropout managed the education portfolio from June 1995 to October 1997 and was later appointed minister of natural resources, but was dropped from cabinet once Ernie Eves succeeded Harris as premier in 2002.

Snobelen is charged with careless storage of a firearm, unauthorized possession of a firearm and unlawful acquisition of a firearm. He’s due to appear in a Milton court on Feb. 5.
