A quiet Sunday in Toronto almost turned into a nightmare for weekend commuters downtown when a suspicious package led TTC officials to temporarily shut down the Yonge subway line between Bloor and Union stations.
Police say the package was discovered just after 1:30pm at Yonge and Alexander Street.
The immediate area was cleared, and the bomb squad was called-in.
“Nobody really knew what was going on,” said eyewitness Hugh Sturdy.
“There were people wondering whether it was somebody with a gun or some other incident had happened.
“It (the package) was located just outside the Courtyard Marriot building right at the corner of Yonge and Alexander,” Sturdy added.
The incident also halted a late portion of Sunday’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
There’s no word on what was in the package, but the area has since reopened to traffic.
