It’s been a busy week for school lockdowns in Toronto, an emergency procedure that is more often practiced than performed. But on Friday, there were two more – and they had nothing to do with what happened on campus.
Students and staff were put on alert at Chester Le Public School and Beverly Glen Junior P.S. near Victoria and Finch in the morning, because of a domestic dispute that spun out of control in a home in the neighbourhood.
Police were forced to Taser the man wanted in that disturbance and they eventually took him into custody. Once he was placed under arrested, the lockdown was lifted. The emergency measure, known as a Partial Lockdown, is called when there’s an incident in the area that doesn’t directly affect the schools involved. Doors to the building are locked but classes continue as normal. (For more on lockdowns, click here.)
Earlier this week came another case where the rare call was made. On Wednesday, kids were kept in their classrooms at Our Lady Of Victory Elementary School in the Weston and Eglinton area after a threat of a shooting was heard over a school radio. A 14-year-old has now been charged in that case.
