A wicked storm on Sunday drenched Toronto and the surrounding areas – and brought out incredible images.
Around the noon hour, Environment Canada was warning of potential thunderstorms producing wind gusts of 100 km/h along with large hail and torrential downpours accumulating to 50 millimetres or more in less than an hour.
They weren’t wrong, and it lasted through much of the night.
“Over the course of the evening we had 4,900 lightning strikes within a 50km radius of the CN Tower, that was recorded on the Environment Canada lightning detection sensors,” explained CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss. “That’s a lot of lightning.”
The day brought also brought rain and thunder to the GTA – and you were there to capture it in photos and video:

On Monday that focus was on cleaning up the city, which was littered with fallen tree branches and other debris.
City crews were out dealing with the cleanup all day.
Power was knocked out for a time at Pearson International Airport Sunday night, and dozens of flights were grounded, meaning some passengers were forced to spend the night inside the hub.
“To be in here at Pearson of all places when the power goes off, it was pretty crazy because you don’t expect that here,” noted traveller Omar Singh.
