New On DVD – August 18, 2009

The Last House on the Left (2009, Unrated Blu-ray) CityNews.ca Pick of the Week – The original 1972 The Last House on the Left is one of the most overrated horror films ever made, more laughable than scary. We can thank it for launching director Wes Craven’s career though, who is also producer on the remake. The updated version is a great thriller with a lot of tension. Yes, there are some graphic scenes of violence, but this is a film for adults (parents primarily) and not teens. The Blu-ray release is very crisp and has both the theatrical and unrated version. Special features include the featurette A Look Inside, deleted scenes and a digital copy. Film: *** out of 5 stars. Blu-ray *** out of 5 stars.

Dexter: The Third Season (Blu-ray) – By far one of the best shows on television is Showtime’s Dexter. It’s funny, witty and gets better each season (if you haven’t seen Seasons One and Two I recommend picking them up as well). Along with Michael C. Hall as the title character, Season Three introduces us to District Attorney Miguel Prado (played by Jimmy Smits). The combo are wonderful together and their relationship keeps each episode fresh. Having only ever seen the show on cable I’m amazed at how good it looks on Blu-ray. Definitely worth the purchase. Special features include excerpts from the Dexter books, interviews with the cast, the featurette Dexter By Design and more. Show **** out of 5 stars. Blu-ray **** out of 5 stars.

Hannah Montana: The Movie (Blu-ray) – OMG! It’s Miley Cyrus! Like the Jonas Brothers: 3D Concert Experience DVD that came out in June it’s hard for me to really review this title. Fans of the show/Miley will want it and everyone else should stay away. For what it’s worth the Blu-ray release does look great and comes with a regular DVD and digital copy. Special features include seven music videos, bloopers, deleted scenes and more. Film: N/A Blu-ray: *** out of 5 stars.
