Indonesia Quake Death Toll Rises Dramatically

The death toll in this week’s earthquake in Indonesia has reached a staggering 1,100, according to the UN’s humanitarian chief, John Holmes.

Most of the dead are from the town of Padang.

Wednesday’s 7.6 magnitude quake originated off the coast of Sumatra Island and destroyed more than 500 buildings.  Another quake hit on Thursday morning.

Several schools and hospitals were also destroyed or damaged and thousands may still be trapped in the rubble.
