Alcohol Likely A Factor In Crash That Killed Three

Three people have been killed and two are in critical condition in a devastating crash in the city’s west end.

It happened just before midnight Saturday as a Honda Odyssey traveling eastbound on Finch Ave. W. was turning left onto Tobermory Dr., near Jane St. A BMW struck the van at such a high speed it tore the vehicle apart and came to a stop a full 100 metres past the site of impact.

Three women were pronounced dead at the scene. Two others – a male and a female – were rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition.

The 21-year-old driver of the BMW was treated in hospital for minor injuries. He is under arrest and police say charges are likely.

“Right off the top, you can tell by the damage that’s been done speed is a factor we’re looking at. Alcohol is a factor we’re looking at. This was an extremely high-speed impact,” said Sgt. Tim Burrows of Traffic Services.

Two officers witnessed the BMW speeding by just prior to the crash and another heard the impact. All three attended to the victims until paramedics arrived.
