New On DVD – October 20, 2009

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (Blu-ray) CityNews.ca Pick of the Week Giant alien robots battle one another in a special effects laden tour-de-force. Visually stunning with sound that will make your hair stand on end mixed with over-the-top B-movie acting by Shia LaBeouf and close-ups of Megan Fox’s assets make this an enjoyable popcorn flick. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is not a perfect movie by any means (if you’re looking for story, look elsewhere), but it was exactly what I expected and I got what I came for. The Blu-ray release is a work-of-art and is sure to be a reference title to show off your home theatre system. Special features include commentary with director Michael Bay and writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, deleted and alternate scenes, 25 Years of Transformers featurette, the music video for Linkin Park’s New Divide and a ton more. Also available on a 2-Disc Special Edition DVD. Film **** out of 5 stars. Blu-ray **** out of 5 stars.

Dead Snow (Blu-ray) – Fresh off its run at the AMC Yonge-Dundas in Toronto, it’s a pleasant surprise to see Dead Snow on Blu-ray already. The story of Nazi-zombies attacking a group of cottaging medical students is fun and the film is perfect Halloween-viewing fare. The Blu-ray release looks and sounds amazing for a lower budget horror and includes the special features Ein! Zwei! Die! The Making of Dead Snow, featurettes on the make-up and special effects, trailers and more. Norwegian with English subtitles. Film **** out of 5 stars. Blu-ray **** out of 5 stars.

The Children (Blu-ray) – One of the most disturbing horror films to deal with evil children since The Bad Seed. During a family Christmas vacation the children become ill with what seems to be a flu. Soon they are turning violent and attacking the adults. Thanks to a great cast, I’ve been haunted since watching it and it made me do a double-take at my two-year-old son. Special features include a making-of, deleted scenes, the featurette Working With the Children and more. Film *** out of 5 stars. Blu-ray **** out of 5 stars.

Wrong Turn 3: Left For Dead – The second straight-to-video sequel in the Wrong Turn series is by far the worst. A group of sexy twentysomethings get lost in the backwoods of West Virginia and are hunted and killed by mutant, cannibal freaks. It’s tired, unimaginative, features a weak cast and is quite boring. Special features include deleted scenes and the behind the scenes featurette Wrong Turn 3 in 3 Fingers…I Mean, Parts. Also available on Blu-ray. Film ** out of 5 stars. DVD ** out of 5 stars.
