City Council Votes Against Garbage Fee Increase

Torontonians won’t have to shell over more money in garbage fees despite the fact city officials are working to trim their budget by five per cent.

The proposed two per cent increase in trash collection fees won’t go through thanks to savings from the civic workers’ strike.

On Monday city council voted in favour of a motion from Coun. Karen Stinz to earmark $4.8 million in savings from this summer’s job action to cover the garbage fee hike.

The remaining $31 million the city saved during the strike will be put towards next year’s operating budget.
