Transit worker seen napping apologizes for ‘any embarrassment’

A Toronto transit fare collector who was photographed napping in his booth has apologized to passengers, co-workers and his bosses.

George Robitaille told the Toronto Sun he is sorry for “any embarrassment” he may have caused. The photo, taken by transit user Jason Wieler on his iPhone, was posted online and caused a firestorm of protest from riders.

Robitaille, an almost 30-year TTC veteran, told the Sun he underwent a heart procedure in August and is taking special medication.

The 55-year-old fare collector did not elaborate, however, saying only “there are some health issues.”

Robitaille said he was upset when the photo appeared in the media last Friday because it caused grief for all TTC workers. TTC spokesman Brad Ross says the napping incident “is a personnel matter” and it’s not something he can comment on.
