Sound Cannons Must Be Silenced: Protest Group

A group planning a protest against the G20 summit says the sound cannons must be silenced.

The Canadian Civil Liberties Association says there’s no evidence the long-range acoustic devices (L-RADs) can be used safely. They and other organizers of the June 26 rally are seeking an injunction to stop police from using the sound cannons.

The devices were purchased by Toronto Police last month. Officers on the streets in downtown Toronto will be using three 100x model L-RADs (see specifications here) that are worn on the body. The fourth and larger unit, an L-RAD 300x (specifications here), would be used by the Marine Unit, if needed.

The Ontario Federation of Labour is also planning to attend the June 26 rally and hopes the subsequent march will be “family friendly.” President Sid Ryan says they are trying to work with police, but are being met with a show of force.

The rally and march will also include representatives from the Canadian Labour Congress and is likely to be the largest public demonstration during the G20 summit.
