RIM moves up to No. 4 in top 5 global mobile phone vendors

MONTREAL, Que. – The Canadian inventor of the BlackBerry has overtaken Sony Ericsson to claim the No. 4 spot in a ranking of the world’s top mobile phone makers.

Research In Motion shipped 11.2 million of its BlackBerrys in the second quarter, pushing it up one notch on a global ranking from IDC.

RIM first cracked IDC’s top five list in April and had the highest growth rate in the latest quarterly ranking — 40 per cent.

Nokia, Samsung and LG Electronics continued to hold the top three spots while Sony Ericsson dropped a notch to No. 5.

Apple didn’t make IDC’s top five with its iPhone.

IDC said the worldwide market improved during the quarter, with 317.5 million units over the three months, up 14.5 per cent more than last year.
