TORONTO, Ont. – Heading back to school after the lazy days of summer can be hard on students of all ages, including those heading back to the gruelling hours of university and college.
Ryerson University’s Learning Success Centre has issued with a few tips in order to help students.
Reed Hilton-Eddy, a learning skills strategist at Ryerson, said when it comes to studying, students should give themselves two hours of study time to every one hour of lecture time. So, if a student has three hours of lecture a week, he or she should study for six hours.
Work on the most difficult subjects during your peak energy times when the mind is fresh and takes breaks during a long study session.
Time management is also important for successful learning. Hilton-Eddy suggested getting a calendar that divides the term into months. Mark down due dates for major projects assignments, papers and exams. Students should always look ahead so that they know what to expect each week.
Students also have to balance their academic work with their job and social life. Get priorities straight and be prepared to live with the consequences of your choice.
If it’s a student’s first time in a new school, he or she should familiarize his or herself with the academic and student support on campus. Students should also get to know the place in which they will be spending the majority of their time.
