Councillor Howard Moscoe Retires

His sharp wit and cranky quips made him a household name in Toronto. But after 31 years, Councillor Howard Moscoe is retiring from politics.
A former high-school art teacher, the 70-year-old has represented residents in a number of city wards.
Many residents will remember Moscoe as the long-time chair of the TTC, who revamped the taxi industry and jousted with then-Mayor Mel Lastman.
“The real high for me was when Mel Lastman tried to dump me from the TTC, and had four out of seven votes on the transit commission and we managed to outsmart him,” Moscoe said.
“You know, in this job you have to have a sense of humor. If you don’t, you don’t belong in politics.”
Moscoe said he has received many job offers and although he’s leaving public office, he’s not retiring yet.
“I’m not one to sit around the house and argue about where to hang pictures,” he said. “Someday, I’ll retire to my gravesite.”
