Three Men Still At Large After Massive Opium Bust

Editor’s note: CityNews has learned in 2024 that one of the three wanted men is confirmed not wanted any longer.

A major GTA drug bust involving Toronto, Peel and York police services, and the Canada Border Services Agency has disabled an alleged opium ring.

A year-long investigation, dubbed Project Khiar, culminated on Wednesday with the arrest of seven men and two women. They’ve all been charged with dozens of drug-related offences, and officers say they seized drugs, cash, and four luxury vehicles from the accused.

Charged are: Fardin Ayati-Ghaffari, 47; Saeid Chegini, 27; Mansour Chegini, 50; Naeim Dehghansai Ghahramanlou, 27; and Shahin Azhadi, 38, all of Richmond Hill; and Somayyeh Fathollahi-Ghocheh, 26; Mehrdad Barehi, 40, Mohsen Rouhani Esfahani, 44; and Crystal Lee Eden, 31, of Toronto.

They were all scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday morning.

Three men are still at large. They are Lakhbir Shokar, 46, Mohamed Medhi Sajjadi, 41, and another individual.

Police suspect others may have been approached by the accused and asked to accept packages from Iran which, without their knowledge, contained opium hidden inside.
