CFL drops Argos from Labour Day Classic

The Canadian Football League announced its 2011 schedule on Friday and there is one notable date missing.

For the first time since 1990, the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats will not be playing each other in the annual Labour Day classic.

On Monday, Sept. 5, the Tiger-Cats will host the Montreal Alouettes, while the Argonauts will play the B.C. Lions on Friday, Sept. 2.

The other traditional Labour Day matchups remain intact, as the Calgary Stampeders will host the Edmonton Eskimos on the Monday, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders will welcome the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Sunday, Sept. 4.

The CFL season will begin on June 30 when the Alouettes launch their quest for a third straight Grey Cup championship with a home game against the Lions.

“The Als’ quest to achieve a rare ‘three-peat’ is just one of the story lines that will captivate our fans as our league makes its journey towards the 99th Grey Cup game this November in a beautifully refurbished B.C. Place in Vancouver,” said CFL commissioner Mark Cohon.

The Als are attempting to be the first CFL team in almost three decades to win three Grey Cups in a row. The Eskimos captured five consecutive Grey Cups from 1978 to 1982, and three in a row from 1954 to 1956, while the Argonauts won in 1945, 1946 and 1947.

The Als-Lions contest is followed by a double header on Canada Day, with the Blue Bombers visiting the Tiger-Cats and the Argonauts playing the Stampeders in Calgary. Canada Day Kickoff Weekend closes with the Western Division champion Roughriders hosting the Eskimos on Sunday, July 3.
