York Region Transit workers to strike

A union representing about 200 bus drivers and maintenance workers in York Region says its members plan to strike at 12:01am on Tuesday.

Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 and Veolia Transportation met on Friday for a new round of contract discussions after workers rejected their first tentative deal on Wednesday.

Talks between the two sides broke down, however, and they weren’t able to reach a new agreement.

Veolia is one of four private contractors providing services for York Region Transit and operates 24 routes serving about 28,000 residents mainly in Vaughan, but also in Richmond Hill, Newmarket, Aurora, Markham and King Township.

The Lombard, Ill.-based company called its original offer “a fair and responsible agreement and one which exceeded current industry standards.”

The settlement included a 10.5 per cent pay increase spread over four years, a $600 signing bonus, and a premium for maintenance employees on the night shift. The workers took issue with the four sick days per year (at six hours pay per day) and the health benefits.
