Proposed changes to Drive Clean program to take effect in Sept.

The provincial government says its proposed changes to the Drive Clean program would come into effect in September.

Environment Minister John Wilkinson said Monday that if the government’s plan to ease the rules surrounding emissions testing is passed, the new guidelines would take effect September 1.

The provincial government is proposing that emissions tests should no longer be required on vehicles less than seven years old as part of their registration renewal — the rule currently applies to cars and trucks five years and older.

Historic plated vehicles will also be exempt.

The government also plans to exempt vehicles being transferred between family members, coming off lease and being purchased and having its registration renewed and passed a test the previous year.
