WASHAGO, Ont. – A 13-year-old boy is dead and another man is missing after a canoe capsized on the waters of Lake Couchiching, Tuesday morning.
Around 10 a.m., police were called to the lake off Lunge Point Lane, near Cumberland Beach. When they arrived, they found the boy floating in the water near the overturned canoe.
An investigation revealed a 23-year-old man was missing. As a result, the OPP’s underwater team is assisting with the search.
“We do have our underwater search and recovery unit divers in the water as we speak, and they will continue to search in the hopes of trying to locate the missing 23-year-old male,” OPP Constable Peter Leon told 680News.
“Sadly though, the 13-year-old boy who was pulled from the water this morning shortly after 10:00 a.m. has been pronounced deceased at Orillia Soldier Memorial Hospital.”
The OPP told the Barrie Examiner the two males – who are related – headed out in the aluminum canoe about 7 a.m.
