4 men charged at city hall protest

Four men have been charged following a rally at Toronto City Hall that turned violent during the budget debate on Tuesday.
Toronto police say a planned demonstration at Nathan Phillips Square on Tuesday evening turned violent when some of the 100 or so protesters clashed with police officers. Four men were arrested.
The men’s names weren’t disclosed but police said Wednesday they were charged with obstructing a peace officer, unlawful assembly and mischief interfere with property.
They are scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Feb. 27-29.
The Tuesday rally was organized by the Toronto Stop the Cuts Network, despite the fact Toronto City Council passed its 2012 budget without some of the most controversial proposed service cuts.
Protesters from the Occupy movement camped at Nathan Phillips Square Wednesday, but were asked to leave by city officials.
The demonstrators moved the camp slightly west to provincial property, setting up on a laneway beside the University Avenue courthouse.
Protesters tell CityNews they have requested an explanation in writing from the city as to why they were asked to leave, but as of yet this has not been provided.
