Canadian opera star Measha Brueggergosman is urging all Canadians to take a cholesterol test after her own battle with heart disease.
“Heart disease and stroke is the number one killer in Canada and in 2008 it killed more women than breast cancer did,” Brueggergosman said.
“I think a lot of women don’t know that.”
Nearly three years ago, Brueggergosman was rushed to Toronto General Hospital for emergency open heart surgery. She was suffering from aortic dissection, or a tear in the inner wall of the aorta.
“I hope it doesn’t catch on – the whole dissected aorta learning curve,” she said.
Brueggergosman hasn’t let her health scare slow her down. She’s back to performing, and has an exciting new gig as a judge on the upcoming Citytv show, “Canada’s Got Talent.”
“Having very high blood cholesterol is a very important risk indicator for heart and stroke, if you can monitor that, along with your blood pressure, make small changes in life style, maintain an active life style, you’ll be around to take care of the people you love,” said Brueggergosman
