McGuinty proposes pay freeze extension

TORONTO, Ont. – Premier Dalton McGuinty wants to extend the pay freeze of all provincial politicians for another two years.
He is hoping it will convince other public sector workers to do the same.
A three-year wage freeze for MPPs is set to end this year but, with the Ontario government staring down a $16-billion deficit, the premier is proposing an extension.
He says it is a case of leading by example.
“We intend to ask all our public sector partners to be part of the solution when it comes to eliminating our deficit and preserving, and indeed enhancing, the quality of our public services.”
The Elementary Teachers’ Federation, which represents more than 70,000 teachers, is very cold to the idea. Their contract expires in August.
Doctors have also been asked to accept a salary freeze.
