Apple expected to unveil iPad mini Oct. 23

Rumours are swirling that Apple Inc. will unveil its iPad mini next week, after reporters were invited to a California event that promised a “little” more.

The event is scheduled for Oct. 23 and the news release holds a possible clue.

“We’ve got a little more to show you,” it reads, a possible reference to the device’s small size.

When the iPhone 5 was launched last month, the news release included a large number “5,” but no reference to the phone itself.

CNN reported that the iPad mini will likely have a seven- or eight-inch screen instead of the existing 9.5-inch screen and will be priced under $300.

The latest iPad retails for more than $500.

The iPad mini is seen as a direct competitor to Amazon’s Kindle and Google’s Nexus.  The latest Kindle has a six-inch display and retails for $89. The Nexus has a seven-inch display and is $199.

Meanwhile, Microsoft Corp. is set to launch its tablet device, the Surface, on Oct. 26.
