Toward a smoke-free Toronto

There could be fewer places in the city for smokers to light up, after the Toronto Board of Health voted Monday to hold consultations to expand the existing smoking bylaws.

The additional ban would cover restaurant and bar patios, the areas on and around sports fields, hospital grounds and building entrances.

The proposal comes from the city’s medical officer of health Dr. David McKeown.

He wants to ban smoking on all patios where food and drinks are served.

Under the Smoke Free Ontario Act (SFOA) passed by the provincial government in 2006, smoking is banned on covered patios.
