Premier Dalton McGuinty’s replacement chosen

On Oct. 15, Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty took the unusual step of proroguing parliament and announced that he’d step down as Liberal leader once a replacement was chosen.

So the race is on to replace him, with cabinet ministers, including Kathleen Wynne, Charles Sousa, Glen Murray and Eric Hoskins seeking the party’s nomination.

Former industry minister Sandra Pupatello said last week she wants to lead the party. Former MP and MPP Gerard Kennedy announced Monday he’d run.

Economic development minister Brad Duguid, finance minister Dwight Duncan and George Smitherman said they wouldn’t run, and Ontario Liberal party president Yasir Naqvi has also bowed out of the race.

Other female MPPs have also been flagged by observers as potential replacements, including health minister Deb Matthews.

The deadline to enter the race is Nov. 23 with the leadership convention Jan. 25-27, 2013.
