Mayor Rob Ford cancels New Year’s levee

Mayor Rob Ford has cancelled his annual New Year’s levee, which he has hosted for the past two years.

Ford’s press secretary George Christopoulos confirmed Wednesday that the city has “decided against holding the traditional New Year’s levee.

“We are looking at other options that are more family friendly,” he said.

The annual levee gives residents the chance to meet the mayor and some city councillors.

Last year, the event was held on Jan. 2 in the City Hall rotunda.

Ford, who was convicted in a conflict-of-interest case and could be removed from office, is currently out of Toronto. He is taking some “personal time” away from city hall, his spokesperson confirmed.

Ford was ordered ousted from office after an Ontario Superior Court judge found he violated conflict of interest rules, but was granted a stay last Wednesday that allowed him to remain as mayor while his appeal is heard.

A panel of judges with the Divisional Court will hear his appeal on Jan. 7, 2013.
