Pauline Phillips, the woman who founded the Dear Abby column, has died.
She was 94 and had Alzheimer’s, her publisher Universal UClick said Wednesday. A private funeral was held Thursday.
Phillips created the column in 1956 and her twin sister Esther Friedman Lederer followed suit, writing the competing column Dear Ann Landers.
Phillips’ columns, penned under the pseudonym Abigail Van Buren, eventually reached 100 million readers.
She used her platform to support equal rights for women and gay people and was one of the first advice columns to encourage divorce.
Her daughter Jeanne Phillips took over the column in 2002 and is still writing it.
Lederer died in 2002.
