A 32-year-old woman has been charged with attempting to murder her son, 11, in their Etobicoke apartment early Friday morning.
The mother, whose name is being withheld to protect the child, was also charged with aggravated assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life.
Around 1 a.m., officers were called to the 12th floor of a building on Eva Road, near Bloor Street and Highway 427, and had to break through the glass doors of the lobby to get in.
Neighbours had heard terrified screams coming from the apartment, as well as a big bang and commotion on the balcony.
Police found the boy with severe head injuries, and he was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition.
They said a fridge was involved in the assault.
The accused and a girl were taken into custody, but the girl — believed to be a teen — has since been released. Witnesses said both were acting strangely.
“[The woman] was either praying — I don’t think it was speaking in tongues — it was just praying, as they dragged her out to the cop car,” said resident Steve Wright.
There were two other children in the apartment who are now in the care of the Children’s Aid Society.
Building management said it hasn’t had any complaints about the family, which moved into the highrise about two years ago.
The woman will appear in an Old City Hall court on Saturday.
