Environment Canada issues severe thunderstorm watch for GTA

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Toronto and much of the GTA.

Large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall are expected, the agency says.

Niagara, Hamilton, Halton, Peel, York and Durham are all affected.

Meanwhile, Toronto is under a heat alert for the second straight day with an expected high of 32 C that will feel like 42 C with the humidity.

“Today’s another sticky one,” CityNews weather specialist Frank Ferragine said Wednesday.

By 5:30 a.m., temperatures were already above the seasonal norm of 22 C. The city was at 24 C – and it felt like 32 C.

The record to beat is 33.9 C. It was set on Sept. 11, 1952.

On Friday, fall-like temperatures will return with a high of 15 C in the forecast.

Toronto Public Health first issued the heat alert Tuesday morning. Dr. David McKeown, the city’s medical officer of health, wants people to look out for those who may be more vulnerable to the heat, like seniors, the chronically ill and children.

Stay hydrated and seek out air-conditioned spaces, the city advised, and never leave pets, children or seniors unattended in the car.

The city also warned the high temperatures could cause heat-related illnesses. Here are the symptoms to watch out for:

  • dizziness or fainting
  • nausea or vomiting
  • headache
  • rapid breathing and heartbeat
  • extreme thirst
