Toronto gets on average about 1,100 watermain breaks each year, resulting from the mechanical or structural failure of its underground pipes.
North York, Scarborough and Etobicoke experience the highest break rates as their underground pipes are located in predominantly clay soil, the city says.
Watermain breaks are the result of several factors including external pipe corrosion, thinning of pipe walls and the freeze-thaw cycle of winter.
