Danica Rain, who was born a man, knew from an early age that she was a woman.
Living in Sudbury, Rain waited for more than a year for a doctor’s referral. There are no surgeons that can do the surgery in Ontario. There is only one clinic in the country that offers the surgery, the Centre Métropolitain de Chirurgie in Montreal, which was recently targeted by a suspected arsonist.
The province recently introduced new regulations that allow Ontario residents to go out of province or out of country for gender reassignment surgery.
Rain is now in Thailand, where she underwent the surgery on Monday.
Reporter Cynthia Mulligan is in Thailand reporting on the days leading up to the surgery and on the surgery itself.
