The Ministry of the Environment has been called in to investigate a fuel spill in Caledon.
A tanker truck lost a trailer on Highway 9 at Airport Road around 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday, spilling more than 23,000 litres (5,283 gallons) of fuel onto the roadway.
That number could climb to 33,000 litres, the OPP said, and there are concerns the fuel could leak into a nearby creek and conservation area. The spill occurred near the Glen Haffy Conservation Area, home to wetlands and a fish hatchery that raises rainbow trout, according to the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority.
The Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change is on scene along with a hazardous materials team as they work on the spill.
So far, all the fuel has been trapped in catch basins. Crews are now working to pump out those catch basins and there is no immediate threat to the Humber River.
The highway is closed for the cleanup. It may not reopen until 3 p.m. or 4 p.m.
No one was injured.
Clarification: An earlier version of this story indicated that a tanker truck overturned. In fact, a second tank came off the truck as the driver was heading west.
