Not all coupons are created equal, at least if you’re A&W

By Faiza Amin

At first sight, A&W’s latest coupon books all look similar- the same two burgers photographed on the front, the coupon dates match, and the fast food chain’s slogan is plastered everywhere. But when you open the booklets, you learn what separates one from the other; the prices don’t match.

CityNews obtained two versions, and although the promotions are similar, the price in one of the booklets is higher than the other. The price gap differs as much as one dollar per coupon for some burgers and fries.

The flyer with the lower prices was delivered in the Yonge and Eglinton area, while the more expensive options were distributed to residents near Pape and Danforth.

The reasoning behind that, according to A&W’s head office, is that the company created different promotions, but franchisees ultimately had to pick one.

“At A&W, all local marketing programs and menu prices are determined and distributed at the discretion of each franchisee,” Susan Senecal, President and Chief Operating Officer said in an email statement. “For this reason, menu prices and offers may vary by region and restaurant,”

The promotion started just a few days ago, and goes well into April.

The company hasn’t said if there are any more versions of the coupon books distributed in Toronto.

Regardless of which coupons used, the chain says both versions will be accepted at participating A&W restaurants.
