OPP out in full force over Thanksgiving weekend

By News staff

Roads and highways will be busy this weekend as everyone heads out for Thanksgiving celebrations, and as usual, the OPP will be out in full force.

The national initiative, “Operation Impact,” targets the four big causes of death on our roads; aggressive driving, impaired and inattentive driving, and improper seatbelt use.

Police say those four factors have been responsible for 156 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads so far this year, and caused more than 15,000 collisions — 96 of which were fatal.

OPP say of the 156 deaths on provincial roadways, 50 were linked to speeding, 37 were attributed to inattentive driving, 35 were caused by impaired driving, while 34 were due to not wearing a seatbelt.

As well, so far this year, the OPP has laid more than 175,000 charges against aggressive, distracted and impaired drivers, and occupants of vehicles who are not buckled up.
