A 31-year-old woman and her two-year-old son are dead after a two-vehicle crash in Mississauga.
Emergency crews were called to Mavis and Burnhamthorpe roads around 2 a.m. on Thursday.
Peel police believe the vehicle carrying the woman, her 33 year-old husband and their child was travelling eastbound on Burnhamthorpe when it was hit broadside by a vehicle that was heading north on Mavis.
The suspect vehicle then continued north about 50-75 metres before coming to a rest next to a sidewalk. The vehicle then caught on fire, but the 18-year-old man inside the vehicle was able to get out.
The woman’s husband, who was behind the wheel of the first vehicle, remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The 18-year-old man was also taken to hospital but is expected to survive. He has been taken into custody, and police said charges are likely in the case.
Police are investigating if impaired driving and speed were factors in the crash.
“We are looking at impairment as a factor, we’re looking at speed as a factor as well,” Const. Danny Marttini said at the scene.
Friends have identified the victims as Saket Dogra, 33, his wife Khusbu Aroro, 31, and their son Pakrit. The family home is minutes from the intersection where the fatal crash occurred.
Sanket works in the tech industry and he brought his wife and son to Canada from India just over a year ago.
