Toronto Fire is at the scene of a flood at a highrise apartment building in Etobicoke.
It happened around 2 a.m. at a building on Dixon Road just east of Kipling Avenue.
When emergency crews arrived they found about three feet of water in the lower level of the building.
District Chief Vernon Hiller said a watermain broke outside the building, flooding the area, and then water started pouring in through an open window on a lower unit.
Water flooded stairwells and outside the front of the building.
Power remains at the building and residents are allowed to remain inside their units.
“The water (has) been shut off. The building still has power and heat, thankfully, but residents will be without water for quite a while,” Hiller said.
There has been no word on how long it will take before the situation has been resolved.
“We’re only able to lower it with our five pumps about eight inches an hour so we’ve still got a couple more feet to go,” Hiller explained.
City crews will then have to come in and cap the break in the watermain.
