A 32-year-old man has been killed after a shooting outside a boxing gym in Mississauga on Monday morning.
Police were called to Huf Boxing Gym near Dundas Street East and Cawthra Road around 11:20 a.m.
The shooting happened in the parking lot where the victim was shot at multiple times.
He was taken to hospital by paramedics in life-threatening condition, where he later died of his injuries.
Two men wearing dark hoodies fled the area, police said in a news release.
A burned out car was also found just around the corner on Rymal Road. Police say the car and the shooting are connected, but would not confirm if a suspect was in the vehicle.
Arthur, a member at Huf Boxing Gym, said he was working out when he heard a loud bang. “I didn’t know what to make of it, but after a guy came in screaming ‘Call 9-1-1’ that was when I figured something was wrong.”
“I’ve been here for 30 years in this business here and it’s a very peaceful place,” said Mark Noonan of Plumbing Mart, which is located in the same complex as the gym. “This shatters everybody’s confidence a little bit that’s for sure.”
Noonan was in a meeting when the shooting happened. He says police arrived and told staff and customers to remain inside the store.
We’re a little shook up, said Noonan. “You hear about (shootings) all the time but when it happens on your own doorstep it’s a little bit unnerving.”
Two day cares centres were placed in a hold and secure in connection with the incident, but it has since been lifted.
