Four people have injuries ranging from serious to critical after a head-on crash in Markham.

Emergency crews were called to Steeles Avenue and Sewells Road around 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Toronto police said two vehicles collided head-on and three other vehicles swerved to avoid the crash.

One of the drivers, a woman in her 50s, was taken to hospital in critical condition. Four men in their 50s were taken to a trauma centre. They were all in the same vehicle and are not believed have life-threatening injuries. The driver suffered a broken leg.

That stretch of Steeles has been shut down for the police investigation.
