Man dies after transport truck hit-and-run on Hwy. 401

By News staff

A 67-year-old man has died after being struck by a transport truck on Highway 401 at Keele Street in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Ontario provincial police were called to the area around 1 a.m.

Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says the man was outside his vehicle in the eastbound express lanes of Highway 401, just below Keele Street when he was struck by a truck. He suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unclear why the victim was outside his vehicle on the highway.

The driver of the truck reportedly slowed down and nearly stopped before leaving the scene. The truck is described as a fuel tanker truck or bulk transport truck and was last seen heading eastbound on the 401.

Photos of the truck taken by traffic cameras in the area have been released.

The express lanes of the 401 were closed from the east of Highway 400 to approaching Yonge Street. They reopened just before 6 a.m.

Anyone with dash camera video or any other information is asked to contact police.
