Toronto man wanted for 2017 murder arrested in the U.S.

A Toronto man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for a murder two years ago has been arrested in the United States.

Toronto police confirm Akil Whyte, then 24, was taken into custody and is awaiting extradition.

Whyte was wanted for first-degree murder in the death of 33-year-old Hamilton man Leonard Pinnock on April 21, 2017.

Leonard Pinnock, 33, was shot and killed while sitting in his car in a plaza parking lot in the area of Dufferin Street and Bowie Avenue area, near Eglinton Avenue West. He was in Toronto to give a ride to a friend.

Two men approached Pinnock’s car and opened fire.

At the time, investigators said they believe this was a random attack.
