The editor of Toronto-based Your Ward News, convicted for promoting hatred against women and Jews, has been granted bail, a police source told CityNews.

Last week, James Sears, 55, was handed the maximum one-year jail sentence.

A police source said Sears submitted an appeal application. He had a bail hearing on Tuesday and was granted bail.

Sears and Your Ward News publisher LeRoy St. Germaine, 77, were found guilty in January of two hate counts each.

St. Germaine is expected to be sentenced on Thursday. The Crown wants him jailed for six months.

The free publication was distributed over three years to more than 300,000 homes and businesses in the Toronto area as well as online.

It consistently portrayed women as inferior and as inviting rape. It also promoted tropes of Jews drinking the blood of Christian children and denied the Holocaust occurred.
