City of Toronto unveils new photo radar signs

By News Staff

The City of Toronto unveiled its first automated speed enforcement sign on Monday, although it will be a while until tickets are handed out.

The sign is one of 50 going up across Toronto — mostly in school zones — and is part of the city’s Vision Zero plan.

Mayor John Tory said by the spring drivers speeding in these areas will have to pay up when a ticket comes in the mail.

“Beginning with 90 days from today, we will be issuing tickers,” Tory explained.

“I think even the signs will cause people to slow down and I’m proud of the fact that it’s going to save lives in our city.”

The provincial regulations require the city to post a sign 90 days before the cameras can issue tickets.

If someone is caught speeding, the ticket will be mailed to the registered owner of the vehicle. Offenders will only be fined and no demerit points will be applied.

Tory said this is not about money, but saving lives.

“We have a real problem on our hand with people going too fast in many places across the city and people are being killed, and people are being seriously injured and families traumatized,” he said.

“I just think we have an obligation to do everything we can and this is part of that.”

Last year 40 pedestrians were killed on city streets.
