Three people are injured — one in critical condition — after a drive-by shooting on Highway 401 in Pickering.

Provincial police were called to the westbound lanes near Whites Road just before 3:30 a.m. on Friday.

The OPP said officers located a vehicle and three victims at the scene — two males and one female.

However, police sources told 680 NEWS four people were in the car at the time. A second female, who was not injured, was believed to have fled the scene on foot.

Those same sources said one male was shot in the chest and is in critical condition.

Another male was shot in the arm, while one female was grazed in the head by a bullet. They have been treated and released from hospital.

So far, there is no description of the suspect or suspects.

This is the second such shooting in recent weeks, with Toronto police saying three men were shot in a car on Highway 400 earlier this month – one fatally.

In that case, the driver was able to make his way off of the highway and to a gas station, despite being shot while behind the wheel.

OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt says provincial police received 25 calls about gun-related incidents on Ontario highways in the past year, ranging from shootings to people brandishing the weapons.
