The Hospital for Sick Children has declared an outbreak of the novel coronavirus within an inpatient unit specializing in oncology and haematology.

The hospital says a teenager tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday. The patient’s parents and one member of their clinical team has also tested positive.

All other patients have tested negative. Staff on the unit are currently being tested and all those who may have been exposed have been contacted.

SickKids and Toronto Public Health are conducting an investigation to determine how the virus was transmitted.

One other patient who was admitted to SickKids Monday has also been diagnosed with COVID-19, but it is unrelated to the outbreak in the inpatient unit.

Both patients are now being cared for in a dedicated unit.
