Ontario is reporting a record 1,859 new cases of COVID-19 on Saturday while also processing almost 60,000 tests.
The case count surpasses the previous single-day high of 1,855 set back on November 27.
Toronto remains the hotspot in the province with 504 new cases, followed by Peel Region with 463 and York Region with 198 – the seventh straight day that region has recorded more than 150 new cases.
York Region is set to remain in the ‘red-control’ zone despite the fact daily case counts have approached almost 200 in three of the last four days.
Provincial health minister Christine Elliott says in tweet Saturday morning that the spread of COVID-19 has reached “a critical point” and that everyone needs to do their part and follow public health guidelines.
The province says 20 more people have died from coronavirus – 13 of those coming from long-term care settings. That raises the provincial total to 3,757. Over the course of the past week, 133 people have died from COVID-19.
Provincial health officials completed 59,399 tests in the previous 24-hour period – a record high as well. More than 63,000 results are still pending.
Hospitalizations climbed past 700 while patients in the ICU remained above 200 for the second straight day.
