Ontario reports just under 800 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday

Ontario continues to report a rise in daily COVID-19 cases with 793 new infections confirmed on Friday.

It is the highest number of new cases in a single day since September 18 when 821 were reported.

According to provincial data, 470 of the new cases are in those who are not fully vaccinated or who have an unknown vaccination status, while 323 are fully vaccinated.

The rolling seven-day average of new cases now stands at 625 – the highest its been since late September. A week ago it was 527.

The province says 269 people are hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 and of those, 205 are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccine status. Of the 128 people in the ICU due to COVID, 116 are not fully vaccinated or have an unknown vaccine status.

Toronto reported 115 new cases of COVID-19, its highest single-day total since October 9th. York Region almost doubled its new case count Friday with 60 while Peel Region confirmed 54 new infections.

The province also reported 109 new school-related cases across the province on Friday – 101 of them in students. More than 12 per cent of all schools across the province have now reported a case with seven closed due to outbreaks.

Another four people have died as a result of the virus, bringing the provincial death toll to 9.959.

The province completed 30,515 tests in the past 24 hours with a test positivity rate of 2.6 per cent.

Health officials say 13,897 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered on Thursday. So far, more than 88 per cent of Ontarians aged 12 and over have received one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and more than 85 per cent are fully vaccinated.
