Teen critically injured in Boxing Day crash dies in hospital

One of two critically injured people in a multi-vehicle crash on Boxing Day has died in hospital.

Police say an 18-year-old man who suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash died of his injuries in hospital on New Year’s Day.

A total of eight people, including two children, were injured when two cars collided at Yonge and Richmond streets around 2 p.m. on December 26.

Police say a white Hyundai being driven by a 32-year-old man was travelling westbound in the middle lane on Richmond Street when it turned left into the path of a silver Kia, which was also going westbound. The Kia flipped onto its side before striking several pedestrians near the intersection.

Two of the pedestrians were seriously injured.

Firefighters were forced to extricate one of the drivers from their vehicle.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and did not say if any charges have been laid at this point.

The victim has been identified as Kean McKenzie in a statement from family members, in which they called his death, “senseless.”

“Our family is deeply saddened by Kean’s death. We not only mourn the loss of a wonderful young man, cut down at the prime of his life, but the many contributions he would have made to this world with his kindness, generous spirit, and intellect,” read the statement. “He will be dearly missed by his family and many friends who share our disbelief that something this tragic has happened.”

“This serves as a reminder that we have a long way to go to make sure pedestrians and cyclists are safe in our cities.”
