Toronto will be graced with significant amounts of rain and cooler temperatures on Wednesday ahead of a drop this weekend.

A special weather statement continues for the GTA on Wednesday with significant rainfall expected and a risk of freezing rain and wind gusts, especially for areas to the northwest of the city.

The mixed bag of precipitation is set to begin in time for the morning commute and some school boards have cancelled buses with the York District School Board cancelling all classes (see full list below).

Environment Canada warns drivers that freezing rain could lead to icy surfaces and rainfall amounts up to 20mm could result in ponding and pooling in some spots.

“Freezing rain is possible beginning Wednesday morning, however it is likely to mainly affect areas north of highway 401,” reads the statement from the weather agency. “Areas near the shores of Lake Ontario are likely to remain above the freezing mark, and as a result should receive only rain.”

Temperatures are expected to rise by the afternoon, ending the freezing rain risk.

Areas to the west of the city like Halton Hills, Milton and Hamilton are under a freezing rain warning and colder areas away from the lake could see ice accretion of up to 8mm.

The CityNews 680 guaranteed high for Wednesday is 5 C.

Peter Kimbell from Environment Canada tells CityNews the eagerly anticipated springtime warmup likely won’t arrive until April.

“Cold air will be plunging over Southern Ontario on the weekend,” Kimbell says. “We’ll be in for some cold weather next week. We will get some warmer temperatures but probably not until next month.”

In the meantime, he says we can take solace in the fact that the heavy dumpings of snow appear to be behind us.
