Fire crews doused a blaze at Promenade Mall in Thornhill on Thursday morning.
Video posted to Twitter showed flames jetting from the roof, with large clouds of black smoke billowing.
Vaughan Fire Platoon Chief, Brian Culp, told CityNews the fire started in the kitchen at one of the restaurants in the mall.
“It started in the one restaurant, which was not occupied at the time,” he said. “We went inside and extinguished the fire.”
Emergency crews first arrived on scene at around 10:30 a.m. and immediately started fighting the flames on the roof.
“The first truck on scene was able to go up and start fighting the fire right away while we evacuated the rest of the mall,” Culp said.
Culp added that an investigation is underway, and the Ministry of Health has also been called.
Police evacuated the mall and initially said it would be closed for the day due to heavy smoke that filled the building.
But in an update later in the afternoon, they said the mall was now reopened and operating under regular hours.
