OPP charge 20 people from car rally at Wasaga Beach, warn of repeat this weekend

Ontario provincial police have charged more than a dozen people after a late-August car rally in Wasaga Beach as authorities warn of more unsanctioned crowds this weekend.

In a video posted to Twitter on Thursday, Sgt. Robert Simpson with OPP central region confirmed that 20 people were charged with offences related to ongoing investigations into incidents in Wasaga Beach on August 26 to August 28. 

“As a result of numerous ongoing investigations, those 20 people have been charged with offences which include 17 counts of dangerous operation… and 20 counts of stunt driving, contrary to the Highway Traffic Act,” Sgt. Simpson said in the video.

“The accused range in age from 17 to 37 and reside across Ontario, including within the central region and the Greater Toronto Area. The investigation continues, and additional charges may be laid.”

According to videos that circulated on social media following that weekend, there was stunt driving, street racing and vandalism in Wasaga Beach from Saturday night into Sunday morning. The unsanctioned car rally led to two OPP cruisers with smashed front windows.

Sgt. Simpson says OPP are bracing for another expected large car rally in Wasaga Beach this weekend. As a result, OPP is cautioning residents of an increased police presence.

“Responsible, respectful and lawful visitors are welcome to the town of Wasaga Beach,” Sgt. Simpson said.

“Officers will follow a strict but fair approach and actively patrol, educate and enforce laws to ensure compliance and the safety of everyone.”

OPP central region says anyone participating in unlawful activity could face charges and have their vehicle towed.
